Frozen Dead Guy Days: Lotus and Sqwerv in Estes Park

Frozen Dead Guy Days: Lotus and Sqwerv in Estes Park

Last weekend, Estes Park hosted Frozen Dead Guy Days (a festival to celebrate a man who is cryogenically frozen). The festival featured live music from different bands and DJs in the Estes Park Events Complex. Read more below to see my thoughts and feelings after attending this Colorado tradition.

The Vibes

Overall, I enjoyed the vibes of this festival. To start; it struck me as family friendly. I don’t have kids, but there were certainly a lot of people who did. I also noticed people of all ages there – pretty much what you would expect from a quirky festival like FDGD. Speaking of quirky; the crowd dressed up in pretty much every outfit you could think of. From skeletons to Patrick Star to Toad – it’s an ideal festival to make a statement for (almost) no reason. Plus, the festival had striking decorations. There was an “ice” and “fire” stage accompanied by artistic balloons and mood lighting. It was a very aesthetically pleasing place to be.

The Accommodations

I was pleased overall with the accommodations FDGD had to offer. They had multiple food trucks, with a variety of dietary options, and a space to sit and enjoy your food. However, the drink options were lacking. We’re talking $7 for a normal-sized Coors Light, and only a few beer options. It would have been more customer friendly to have tall boys available at a bit of a higher price-point. That being said, the complex had indoor bathrooms (which almost makes up for the drink situation). The Estes Park Events complex had two indoor structures with stages and vendors inside, and one outdoor stage. I really enjoyed being able to go inside to escape the cold, and also having the option of stepping outside if I wanted to cool off or take a seat. One recommendation I would have for the organizers is to provide more seating for the large stage.

Sqwerv

At the “fire stage,” the self-described “Indie-Psych Rock” band, Sqwerv, was an absolute treat! Their crisp sound and tight rhythms were impressive, and their psychedelic style kept me on my toes. They’re local to Denver, but are currently touring around the U.S. from Nebraska to New York, and have show dates on their website until June of this year. Also, they’ll be doing a few more shows in Colorado in Almont, Buena Vista, Nederland, and Cervantes in Denver. Thanks for the great show, Sqwerv!

Lotus

Closing out Frozen Dead Guy Days at the “ice stage” was none other than Lotus. I became indoctrinated into the Lotus Family about four years ago, and about 20 shows later, I have never looked back. Lotus treated the FDGD crows with their songs “Nematode,” “Destroyer,” and a “Once in a Lifetime” cover. If you are a music fan – and if you’re reading this you probably are – you must see Lotus. I find them to be a perfect mix of live instrumentals and electronic music. Every show is different, and every show is a spectacle. Not to mention, they roll through Colorado at least twice a year. They don’t have any other shows in Colorado lined up as of right now, but I’m sure that will change within the next couple of months.

Final Thoughts

Overall, Frozen Dead Guy Days was a fun time! Estes Park is such a beautiful place, and it was great to step outside into the mountains after listening to some fantastic music. If the lineup for next year excites you, I would definitely recommend attending.
