Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country at the Boulder Theater: A Show to Remember

Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country at the Boulder Theater: A Show to Remember

On Thursday, February 27th, the City of Boulder, Colorado had the privilege of hosting Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country. The one-night event before the band went up to Steamboat Springs was, as always, SUCH a treat. This is not typical country.

Background

Daniel Donato is Nashville born, and (per his website) Grateful Dead influenced — Cosmic Country never made so much sense. The band is also comprised of Nathan Aronowitz (keyboards/vocals), Will McGee (bass/vocals), and Will Clark (drums and percussion). Daniel Donato’s first album “A Young Man’s Country” was released in 2020 (check out the cover of “Fire on the Mountain“) and features a humorous album cover involving horses, a skeleton, and mushrooms. Donato’s most recent album release (2023) is named “Reflector” and is the first album to feature the talents of most of his touring band. Cosmic Country is traveling around the US this winter/spring/summer, and has four more shows in Colorado booked currently (yippee Cervantes, Red Rocks, and Rhythms on the Rio!).

The Hype

If you have not seen Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country before, you must. The style is hard to describe, really. The soul is country, yet the personality is rock, folk, bluegrass, and psychedelic. You can go from laying in the desert sun to rumbling on a locomotive real quick. Cosmic Country is the kind of show where it is impossible to loose focus – there is always some element of instrumentation that leaves you hanging on. Not to mention the talent that Aronowitz contributes to Cosmic Country is outstanding. Donato and Aronowitz’s voices harmonize so well, and the way Aronowitz plays the keys is incredibly distinct. Donato’s voice is also something to mention — his voice is soft, yet he has great enunciation, and an overall homey feel. Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country is such an exceptionally good show, and I encourage you to see them (country music lover or not).

The Venue

I don’t think I’ve ever had a bad time at the Boulder Theater, and I’d guess I’ve been there at least ten times. Boulder Theater has tiered audience viewing, so seeing from the back in front of the sound booth wasn’t too difficult for me (I’m 5″1′). Another thing I enjoy about the Boulder Theater is the capacity. The venue is relatively big, never feels oversold, and still has an intimate feel. They also have a balcony with seats if you enjoy that sort of thing. I have also never had a problem with the sound at the Boulder Theater – it always seems well mixed, with enough bass.

Recommendations

Here are some of my favorite songs by Daniel Donato right now:

  • Dance in the Desert
  • Hi-Country
  • Gotta Get Southbound
